I was 14 years old. Lou have been at the Christian Union meeting at school the night before. She showed me a piece of paper with some words written on it and handed it to me. 

I read it and nearly jumped out of my skin. The words were alive and jumping off the paper and I knew who was speaking them. I was amazed. You mean GOD SPEAKS TODAY?

GOD SPEAKS???

I had come from a Christian home, with parents who loved God with all their hearts and were endeavouring to live lives that loved him and loved people. They had taught me so much. They had given me the foundations of my faith and had encouraged me as I was discovering my relationship with God for myself. I had gone to church with them as a child, but it was a small church with only one other person in it my age. I got bored and stopped going to church in my teens, but my relationship with God was real. It was foundation to who I was and the core of my identity. 

But the only way I knew about God's words were reading the bible. I did not know that He spoke TODAY. 

As those words grabbed my heart from the piece of paper I was under no illusion who was speaking them. They were warm and strong, they were written from a place of deep love, strength and tenderness. But they were words of TODAY spoken in language I understood and could relate to. 

To think the God of the Universe was speaking to us today. Reaching out and sharing His passionate heart with us today. I did not know what prophecy was, I did not know that God could speak through someone else the words He wanted to share. I did not know that He was intentional about reaching out to people today. But in that short paragraph that was exactly what I felt. The God of the Universe reaching out to human beings. Reaching out to me. 

That day would forever change me. 

I would never be the same having heard the living word of God speaking through someone to me, and for me to then discover that voice speaking directly to me for myself. My life was marked by that experience and to hear the voice of God became something I would be seeking after the rest of my days. 

The God of the Universe speaks to us today. 

He speaks through the words in the bible, that jump off the page and personalise things for our situations. He speaks through creation, through the beauty of the sunset, the power of the thunderstorm, the majesty of the frozen mountains, His designer hand in the intricate patterns of the butterfly. But He also speaks today through our consciences, through the wisdom of a friend, through the hugs and love of a parent and the laughter of a child, through our gut instinct and intuition, or a nudge or caution saying 'Go left', 'Give Sam a call', 'Check on your child.' He speaks of a world that was not created by random chance, but designed in infinite care and precision. A world that was designed perfect, once. 

The God of the Universe is reaching out to you today, He wants to open your heart up to His voice. His personal relationship He wants to have with you today, through Jesus. If you want to pursue this journey with God for yourself, please pray with me: 

Dear Heavenly Father

I want to know what it is like to journey with You every day of my life. 

I want to hear Your voice speaking to me, coming off the pages of the bible and speaking to me in my everyday life, when I'm getting up, going about my day, out in nature, when I lay down to go to sleep. I want to be able to hear You for myself. 

Please awaken me to hearing Your voice and help teach me to get to know You through the bible as well, that it becomes an anchor for me and the way I live my life. 

Take me on a whole new adventure.
